Official timings have been confirmed for a spectacular Battle of Britain Spitfire display over Portsmouth on Armed Forces Day, June 21, with the aircraft scheduled to fly between 3:55pm and 4:05pm.
Thousands are expected to gather at Southsea Common for the free community celebration featuring military parades and various activities. The historic aircraft will be visible over Portsmouth’s main channel and the Swashway during its ten-minute display window.
Maritime traffic restrictions will be enforced from 3:45pm to 4:15pm, with Portsmouth City Council’s Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boats managing the exclusion zone. The council has organised the entire Armed Forces Day event.
Council leader Steve Pitt stated: “In what is the 80th anniversary year of the end of the Second World War, we are very proud to once again host a day for the whole of Portsmouth to come and honour and celebrate our armed forces community.”
He added: “We’re expecting well over 10,000 people to again attend, and they will be treated to a full day of action and excitement, including a Royal Navy parachute jump and a full Spitfire display.”
Additional Armed Forces Day Activities
The Royal Navy ‘Raiders’ parachute team will perform alongside arena displays, live music and entertainment, all designed to honour serving personnel, veterans and their families.
The main arena features a full military parade led by the Rose and Thistle Pipe Band, dog demonstrations and overhead Spitfire displays. A dedicated BMX arena will showcase cycling tricks and stunts throughout the afternoon.
Visitors can explore the Field Gun Arena and enjoy live performances from local musicians on the main stage. The 6 Regiment Army Air Corps Reserves will display a static Gazelle helicopter with tactical equipment from the Joint Helicopter Group.
Veterans, charities and military organisations will run information stalls and displays. A complimentary climbing wall returns alongside fairground attractions and food vendors. The full event runs from 10am to 4pm, with Snows BMW & MINI Portsmouth providing sponsorship support.
