Three cars collided on the M3 near Winchester causing severe delays after two lanes were closed, with motorists on the opposite carriageway slowing to look at the crash scene worsening traffic conditions.
Motorists faced significant disruption following the three-vehicle collision on the M3 northbound at junction 11, close to Winchester, which occurred around 2pm today.
Two lanes remained shut whilst recovery teams worked to clear the crashed vehicles, with traffic delays extending up to an hour. The incident has created extensive tailbacks stretching back to junction 12 at Eastleigh.
According to AA Traffic News: “Severe delays and two lanes closed due to crash on M3 Northbound at J11 A3090 (Winchester South). Congestion to J12 (Eastleigh) Further delays around Eastleigh, Chandlers Ford, Otterbourne, Twyford, Winchester and surrounding areas.”

The situation has been compounded by curious drivers on the southbound carriageway reducing speed to observe the collision scene. The AA reported: “Queueing traffic due to people slowing to look at crash on M3 Southbound at J10 A31 (Winchester).”
A police representative confirmed: “A three car collision on the northbound carriageway was reported at 2.14pm. No injuries were sustained but two lanes were closed. Officers handed the scene over to Highways just after 3pm.”
Separately, traffic has also been affected by another incident further north on the M3. The AA stated: “Slow traffic due to crash and earlier crash on M3 Northbound from J6 (Basingstoke) to J5 A287 (Hook).”
