M27 traffic chaos amid bridge maintenance works

Motorists are experiencing significant delays on the M27 eastbound between junction 11 and M275 as essential maintenance work begins on two major bridges, causing lane closures and increasing traffic congestion today.

The AA has reported escalating delays affecting drivers travelling eastbound on the M27, with National Highways implementing lane restrictions to facilitate crucial repair work on two substantial bridges located between M27 junction 12 and the Hilsea Interchange.

The maintenance programme commenced on Thursday, 5th June, with lane one closures operating in both directions from 8pm each Thursday through to 6am on Monday mornings throughout June. Both bridges, now five decades old, require extensive refurbishment work.

From July into early August, the closure pattern will shift to affect lane three in both directions, continuing the same weekly schedule.

The comprehensive maintenance programme includes replacing expansion joints on both structures, alongside waterproofing and resurfacing operations. Additionally, engineers will repair and upgrade the concrete infrastructure beneath both bridges and enhance the drainage systems.

National Highways has scheduled these works during overnight and weekend periods to minimise disruption to regular commuter traffic, though significant delays are still being reported during the closure periods.
