Pompey Women have completed the signing of defender Lucy Johnson from Blackburn Rovers, with the 23-year-old left-back penning a two-year deal that includes an optional third year.
Johnson arrives at Fratton Park after making nine appearances for Rovers during the latter half of the 2024/25 Championship campaign, including a full 90-minute performance against Portsmouth at their home ground.
The defender’s footballing journey commenced in Leicester City’s youth setup before she embarked on a four-year stint at Arizona State University in the United States.
During her time across the Atlantic, Johnson successfully balanced her sporting commitments with her academic pursuits, graduating with a criminology and criminal justice degree.
Her collegiate career with the Sun Devils proved highly productive, accumulating 67 appearances whilst contributing three goals and 14 assists to the team’s efforts.
A standout moment came in 2022 when she equalled the university’s single-match assist record by creating three goals against UAB.
Johnson’s international pedigree includes representation for England at youth levels, with her most memorable moment arriving in May 2019 when she scored directly from a corner kick during the UEFA Under-17 Women’s European Championship.
Portsmouth manager Jay Sadler expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition: “We’re thrilled to welcome Lucy to our squad. She’s an offensive-minded full-back who demonstrated her abilities during her brief Championship tenure last season.
“Her natural left-foot provides excellent balance to our defensive line, whilst her energetic approach perfectly matches our requirements. I’m excited to work alongside her and witness her progression within our setup.”
The Pompey women signed Jess Gray and Jazz Bull before this signing.
