Portsmouth manager John Mousinho is determined to maintain his side’s improved away record whilst addressing home form concerns ahead of Saturday’s trip to reigning League One champions Birmingham City.
The Blues have suffered just one defeat on their travels this campaign, a stark contrast to last season when only relegated Luton Town lost more Championship fixtures away from home.
Pompey’s away performances have included a victory at Oxford United on the opening day, alongside creditable draws at West Bromwich Albion, Southampton, and Leicester City, demonstrating their enhanced solidity on the road.
However, Mousinho acknowledges the need for better results at Fratton Park whilst hoping to extend their strong travelling form.
“We felt low on Monday following two home defeats last week and it seems we’ve entered a slight dip in form,” the Blues manager said.
“Our Fratton Park record has been inadequate and we’re desperate to secure victories there specifically.
“However, when travelling we must continue the approach that has delivered relative success, particularly compared to last season.
“It centres on remaining solid and developing from that foundation. The crucial factor is striking the correct balance between attacking and defending.”
Mousinho emphasised his side must avoid extremes on their travels.
“We’ll be more cautious than at home rather than going gung-ho, but equally we don’t want to simply shut up shop.
“Birmingham were formidable last season, winning League One with a record points tally, and they’ve strengthened. It’ll be challenging.
“They’re somewhat unfortunate not to be higher in the table as they could – and probably should – have collected additional points.”
The manager faces a selection decision regarding Josh Murphy, who returned from an ankle injury as a substitute against Stoke City last Saturday.
“There’s obvious temptation, but it’s about whether starting him is appropriate rather than simply extending his minutes from the bench,” Mousinho explained.
Pack: I Must Keep Contributing
“There are no new injury concerns and everything remains largely unchanged. Hayden Matthews did come off with cramp, though he’s fine.
“We’re optimistic Nicolas Schmid and Callum Lang will return as planned after the international break.
“Harvey Blair has trained, but we’re exercising caution. We must also be patient with Franco Umeh as he hasn’t been exposed to our first-team demands.”
