Le Roux: Didn’t Need To Think Twice About Pompey Move

Portsmouth secured South African international Luke Le Roux on Friday, with the midfielder admitting he needed no persuasion to join the Championship club from Swedish side IFK Värnamo.

Pompey strengthened their midfield ranks with a double capture on Friday afternoon. Hours after confirming Márk Kosznovszky’s arrival from MTK Budapest, the Blues announced another signing to satisfy the Fratton faithful’s transfer appetite.

The 25-year-old South African international made the switch from IFK Värnamo, with both players present at the Madejski Stadium to witness Saturday’s friendly triumph over Reading.

Le Roux expressed his delight at the opportunity to represent Portsmouth in the Championship during the forthcoming season.

“I’m genuinely thrilled and excited to be here,” Le Roux said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.

“Growing up as a young lad in South Africa, you always dream of playing in England because these are the leagues you’d watch on television.”

The midfielder revealed the decision was straightforward when Portsmouth’s interest materialised.

“When I heard about this opportunity, it was definitely something I didn’t need to think twice about,” he continued.

“It’s difficult to put what it means into words and I still have to pinch myself because I’ve been working towards this throughout my career.

“My agent informed me of the interest a few weeks ago and then we had a meeting with the head coach and sporting director – that was all it took.

“I don’t think anyone could come out of that meeting and not want to join Pompey. I was told how I would fit into the team and what I would add.

“The project was sold to me and it genuinely excites me what this club wants to achieve, so I’m delighted to make the next step.”

Le Roux, who has earned nine caps for Bafana Bafana, acknowledged that his international debut remains a career highlight, but this move to England represents another significant milestone.

“Winning my first cap for the national team is probably the highlight of my career, but now there’s this move,” he reflected.

“I’ve heard the crowd here is incredible and so I can’t wait to meet all the supporters and I promise them that I will give my absolute best every single day.”

The defensive midfielder has signed a three-year contract at Fratton Park, with the transfer fee from Swedish club IFK Värnamo remaining undisclosed. The deal is subject to international clearance and work permit approval.
