MP supports expanded energy bill help for Portsmouth families

Labour government plans to extend Warm Home Discount scheme to 350,000 additional South East families, providing £150 energy bill reduction next winter for Portsmouth households.

The government has announced significant expansion of energy bill support, with nearly three million more households across Britain set to benefit from cost of living assistance next winter. The enhanced Warm Home Discount programme will reach approximately 6.1 million households nationwide, representing one in five families.

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan welcomed the proposal, which will extend the £150 energy bill discount to thousands more local families. The scheme expansion particularly targets the South East region, where 350,000 additional households will qualify for support.

Stephen Morgan, Portsmouth South MP, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative: “With the cost of living increasing so much in recent years, I know many Portsmouth people are still struggling to make ends meet. That’s why I am delighted by this plan to deliver support for thousands more Portsmouth households saving them £150 off their energy bills. This is the difference a Labour government makes, putting money back in Portsmouth people’s pockets while delivering clean and secure energy in the long term.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasised the personal significance of the support measures: “I know families are still struggling with the cost of living, and I know the fear that comes with not being able to afford your next bill. Providing security and peace of mind for working people is deeply personal to me as Prime Minister and foundational for the Plan for Change. I have no doubt that, like rolling out free school meals, breakfast clubs and childcare support, extending this £150 energy bills support to millions more families will make a real difference.”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighted the government’s broader commitment: “Millions of families will get vital support with the cost of living this coming winter, demonstrating this government’s commitment to put money in people’s pockets through our Plan for Change.”

The Labour government is also fast-tracking debt relief scheme proposals aimed at addressing unsustainable household debt accumulated during the energy crisis. This initiative would help reduce debt servicing costs that currently contribute to higher bills for all consumers.

The expanded support programme aligns with the government’s broader objective to establish Britain as a clean energy superpower whilst delivering long-term energy security and reduced bills for households across Portsmouth and the South East.
