Michael Ivan Murphy, aged 80, passed away peacefully on 11 November 2025 after a short illness. Born in the United Kingdom to a South African father and an English mother, Michael spent his early years in South Africa, where he developed a lifelong connection to his heritage. He remained deeply proud of his South African roots and returned often to visit family and friends.
Michael’s life was one of service and dedication. He began his career in the UK Merchant Navy before joining the Metropolitan Police Force. His path then took him abroad to the Durban Police Force in South Africa and later to the Rhodesian Army. Returning to the UK, he continued his commitment to public service with the Metropolitan Police Force and finally with the Hampshire Constabulary, where he earned the respect of colleagues and the community alike.
Known for his dry humour and charitable generosity, Michael built lasting friendships both locally and across the world. He will be deeply missed by his sisters, Doreen and Sharon, his brothers, Brian and Colin, and the many friends whose lives he touched.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, 17 December at 11:30 a.m. at Portchester Crematorium, South Chapel, followed by a wake at The Vaults, Albert Road, Southsea, at 1:00 p.m.
In accordance with Michael’s wishes, family flowers only; donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
