Police seek information after hotel arson in Southampton

Police are appealing for information after an arson attack at the Highfield House Hotel in Southampton during the early hours of Sunday morning, with a flare thrown through a window.

Hampshire Police received a call at approximately 2:15am on September 7, following reports that a flare had been thrown through an open ground-floor window at the hotel. The resulting fire was extinguished rapidly and no one sustained injuries in the incident.

Police are conducting investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack, including efforts to trace two individuals who were observed approaching the hotel before fleeing from the scene.

The pair departed the location via Shaftesbury Avenue. One suspect was dressed in a dark hooded garment with their face concealed, whilst the second wore a white hooded top.

In response to the incident, police officers attended the hotel on Sunday to carry out enquiries, with investigations continuing throughout this week. Enhanced patrols are also being conducted in the surrounding area.

Anyone possessing information that could aid the investigation is encouraged to contact police by telephoning 101 or visiting the Hampshire Police website, referencing incident number 44250404868.

Chief Inspector Chris Douglas commented: “Whilst this fire was extinguished swiftly, this represents an exceptionally reckless act that could have resulted in tragic consequences.

“Our neighbourhood policing officers will be conducting increased patrols in Portswood over the forthcoming days, and residents with any concerns are encouraged to approach them.

“I strongly encourage anyone with information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to contact us. Should you possess CCTV footage that may have recorded the two suspects before or following the incident, we request that you share this material with us.

“We are collaborating closely with local authorities as this investigation progresses.”

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or via their website.
