A Horndean kitchen blaze caused by an unattended chip pan has left a property with extensive damage after emergency services responded to Draycote Road on Monday morning.
Fire crews from Waterlooville and Havant stations were dispatched to the incident in Clanfield at approximately 11:00 GMT. The occupant managed to extinguish the chip pan fire using blankets before firefighters arrived at the scene.
The blaze and resulting smoke caused considerable damage to the kitchen area. Firefighters provided treatment to the resident for smoke inhalation and a minor burn injury sustained during the incident.
Following the emergency response, crews conducted a comprehensive home fire safety inspection of the property. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service personnel cleared the scene and returned to their stations by midday.
Fire safety officials have emphasised the importance of never leaving chip pans unattended whilst cooking. In the event of a chip pan fire, water should never be used as an extinguishing method, as this can cause the flames to spread rapidly.
Residents are advised to consult Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service’s cooking safety guidance for additional fire prevention tips and information on responding to kitchen fires safely.
