Portsmouth City Council has confirmed its readiness to proceed with the Portsmouth May 2026 local elections as scheduled, rejecting any potential Government-led delays to the democratic process.
Council Leader Councillor Steve Pitt issued a strong statement opposing postponement of the Portsmouth May 2026 local elections, emphasising the authority’s preparedness to deliver voting on 7th May as planned.
“Portsmouth City Council is ready to deliver council elections in May 2026 and is firmly opposed to any Government delay to local democracy being delivered,” Cllr Pitt stated.
The council leader stressed that simultaneous work on devolution and local government reorganisation (LGR) with neighbouring authorities has not affected electoral preparations.
Portsmouth’s stance draws on historical precedent, with Cllr Pitt noting that previous Portsmouth May 2026 local elections have never been postponed due to devolution or LGR processes.
The council maintains that collaborative efforts on regional reorganisation are advancing rapidly whilst election planning continues uninterrupted. Officials remain confident that the Portsmouth May 2026 local elections will proceed without delay on the designated date.
