Chaplin Completes Pompey Return

Conor Chaplin has rejoined Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Championship rivals Ipswich Town. The 28-year-old striker progressed through Fratton Park’s youth system, netting 25 times in 122 outings before leaving for Coventry during summer 2018.

Manager John Mousinho commented: “I’m certain Conor requires little introduction to our supporters.

“This signing will excite everyone and we appreciate Ipswich allowing this move to happen.

“We’re thrilled to secure a proven Championship goalscorer who featured in a team that recently had an exceptional campaign at this level.

“Given he’s in his prime years – combined with his connections here – this represents an excellent acquisition.”

Chaplin became a Pompey academy player aged six, penning his initial professional contract in October 2014 before debuting against Accrington days later.

His maiden senior strike came at Morecambe that same campaign, whilst he contributed eight goals towards securing the 2016/17 League Two championship.

Following his Coventry switch, he experienced Championship football firstly at Barnsley before moving to Ipswich in 2021.

Chaplin shared League One’s ‘Golden Boot’ during 2022/23 as Ipswich secured automatic promotion, earning selection in the division’s ‘Team of the Season’ at the EFL Awards.

He remained influential the subsequent season as the Suffolk outfit achieved consecutive promotions, before scoring his maiden Premier League goal against Bournemouth last campaign.

Chaplin had appeared in all five of Ipswich’s matches this term, as they aim to return immediately following top-flight relegation.

In other pompey transfer news, Umeh, Kirk, and Bursik joined Portsmouth FC while Kamara left Pompey.
