Tony Brown Steps Down as Pompey Chief Operating Officer

Portsmouth Football Club have confirmed that Chief Operating Officer Tony Brown will step down from his role at the end of September after twelve years of service at Fratton Park.

Brown joined the club in June 2013, arriving shortly after the Pompey Supporters’ Trust and Presidents rescued the club from extinction.

The experienced executive was instrumental in rebuilding trust and confidence amongst key internal and external stakeholders while restructuring the club’s financial approach.

In September 2014, Brown successfully renegotiated all outstanding debts to former players and stakeholders, delivering savings exceeding £1m and establishing a secure foundation for the club’s future.

His responsibilities subsequently grew beyond financial management to encompass football and player contract negotiations, supervising the training ground acquisition, and making crucial contributions to Fratton Park’s redevelopment programme, which restored stadium capacity to 21,000 in 2023.

Pompey chief executive Andrew Cullen commented: “Working alongside one of the most exceptional and respected Chief Financial Officers in football has been a privilege during the past four years.

“Tony has spearheaded Portsmouth Football Club’s financial transformation from the difficult period of administration to the positive position we occupy today.

“I’m disappointed to see Tony depart and personally thank him for his professionalism, support, guidance and dedication throughout my four years at Portsmouth Football Club.

“Tony can take pride in the substantial legacy he leaves, alongside his contribution to a cherished football club that is well-positioned for the next phase of its remarkable journey.”

Chairman Michael Eisner stated: “Tony impressed me from our first meeting in 2017, and he was instrumental in my confidence regarding the Portsmouth Football Club acquisition.

“He has shown expert financial stewardship at the club since then, complemented by his outstanding football advice. I wish him continued success in his future endeavours.”

Brown reflected: “Managing club operations and finances during such a significant chapter in its history has been an honour. It’s been an incredible journey over twelve years with never a quiet moment.

“I’m enormously thankful to Michael Eisner, Andrew Cullen and all directors throughout the years for their constant support during my tenure at Pompey.

“Working alongside outstanding colleagues has been a privilege, and I’ll cherish memories of the dedication shown by players, staff, directors and, naturally, the Pompey supporters. Play Up Pompey!”
