Portsmouth opens new home for adults with learning needs

Portsmouth has opened a new supported living facility for young adults with learning disabilities, offering independence and bringing residents closer to their families and local community support networks.

Portsmouth City Council has successfully launched a purpose-built supported living facility designed specifically for young adults with learning disabilities. The project enables seven individuals to live independently whilst receiving the comprehensive care they require.

The council obtained funding to acquire and renovate a previously vacant property, creating accommodation for young people with complex support requirements. Several residents had been placed in out-of-area educational facilities and can now return to Portsmouth as they transition into adult life.

The initiative stemmed from a collective goal to reunite these young people with their Portsmouth families and local communities, whilst providing a secure, nurturing environment that promotes independent living.

The facility comprises six ensuite bedrooms with shared communal areas, plus one fully self-contained flat. Residents receive round-the-clock support from a registered care provider, with Portsmouth City Council serving as the landlord.

Additionally, the young adults will access various local health and social care services, including day programmes and sporting activities specifically designed for adults with learning disabilities.

A celebration event marked the facility’s official opening, recognising the numerous teams and individuals who contributed to realising this project, whilst allowing new residents and their families to tour their future home before moving in.

Michelle, whose son will be residing at the facility, expressed her enthusiasm about the new accommodation. Speaking at the opening event alongside the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, she commented:

“For me, this will have a positive impact in terms of feeling there is a future for my son – and we haven’t had to make a choice under pressure or take something we weren’t 100% comfortable with. I love the setting – it doesn’t feel like a residential care facility; it feels like a student house. I love the fact that he’s going to be with people of similar age and needs. He has a lot of energy, so he’ll adore the garden, looking out onto trees – it’ll be amazing for him.”

Cllr Steve Pitt, Council Leader with responsibility for Culture, Regeneration & Economic Development, said:

“This project shows the dedication and commitment of multiple teams across the council – showcasing ‘one council’ working. From identifying the building and overseeing its refurbishment, to coordinating care and support services, every step has been guided by a shared vision and provides a place for these young adults to live independently.”

The opening morning event was attended by Portsmouth Lady Mayoress Leila Ferguson, Michelle, and Portsmouth Lord Mayor Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson.
