Pompey Women have confirmed that Sophie Quirk has left the club to pursue a full-time career alongside part-time football. The winger has completed a permanent transfer to AFC Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old joined the Blues in 2022 and made 88 appearances, scoring 44 goals during her time at Fratton Park.
Quirk made an immediate impact in Pompey’s title-winning season in 2023, netting a hat-trick against Cheltenham on the opening day. She continued to play a vital role throughout the campaign, with crucial strikes against Chatham, Cardiff and London Bees.
The winger signed a full-time professional contract ahead of the Blues’ maiden Championship campaign, where she found the net 9 times in 26 appearances. She helped Jay Sadler’s side earn their first point of the season after scoring in a 2-2 draw at Sunderland.
Her excellent goalscoring form continued throughout the season, including a brace against Blackburn on the final day to secure Championship safety.
Blues boss Jay Sadler said: “It’s extremely disappointing to lose a player of Sophie’s ability. She’s been a cornerstone of our recent success, and we’d have hoped she’d be with us going into the new WSL 2 campaign.
“Rightfully so, she became a cult hero amongst our fanbase and has etched herself into the recent history of the club, contributing immensely with her performances, goals and assists.
“Her tenacious energy and skilful exuberance were what stood out week on week. Whilst we’re disappointed with the decision, we fully respect her wishes to pursue full-time work alongside her footballing career.
“Personally, I will always remain thankful for her contributions and I wish her every success in the future.”
Sophie Quirk said: “I’ve loved my time at Portsmouth. It’s a special club full of amazing people. I’ve made friends for life here that feel more like family and Pompey will always feel like a second home for me.
“My time here has been full of incredible memories and unforgettable experiences, from winning the league to surviving against the odds in the Championship. I’m incredibly grateful to have been a small part of the big journey the club is on and I can’t wait to see where they can get to.
“It’s never easy to say goodbye, and it’s been one of the hardest decisions to move on, but I feel it’s time to pursue a new chapter in my life. Thank you to all the fans and everyone associated with the club for the support. You’ve made my time here very special.”
Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank Sophie for her incredible contribution during her time on the south coast.
The news came 2 days after Casely departed Pompey women for Oxford.
