Fair Oak gets green light for walking and cycling upgrades

Fair Oak residents will soon benefit from ambitious walking and cycling improvements delivered by Hampshire County Council, focusing on Mortimers Lane, Winchester Road, and Eastleigh Road, with construction beginning later this year.

The comprehensive scheme targets major routes throughout the area and is set to commence construction in the coming months.

Councillor Kirsty North, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Lead Member for Universal Services, expressed her satisfaction with the approval: “I’m delighted to give the go-ahead for this ambitious Fair Oak project, which will transform walking and cycling into safer, simpler and more viable transport options. We’ve carefully considered feedback from local residents and crafted these enhancements to promote more sustainable, healthier travel methods.

We acknowledge residents’ concerns regarding traffic speeds on Mortimers Lane. I’ve asked for extra signage and traffic calming initiatives to be developed alongside this project to tackle these matters.”

The programme will introduce walking and cycling infrastructure enhancements along Mortimers Lane from Pembers Farm Avenue to the B3354 Winchester Road junction, the four-way traffic light controlled junction with Stubbington Way and Eastleigh Road, and along Eastleigh Road’s southern pavement extending to Fratton Way.

Key features include:

  • approximately 1.3km of fresh cycle pathway
  • six uninterrupted footways crossing side streets
  • enhanced pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities
  • extra signage designed to reduce vehicle speeds
  • two additional bus stops

Additional safety measures for Mortimers Lane will be investigated and incorporated into the scheme where practical.

The £3.4 million project receives its funding through developer contributions, known as Section 106 funding.
