Martin MP: New Strategies Will Boost Portsmouth Economy

Amanda Martin MP has praised Labour’s Industrial and Trade Strategies, saying they will create jobs and boost investment in Portsmouth’s defence sector.

The Portsmouth MP welcomed what she described as two significant government initiatives this week, emphasising their potential to transform local economic prospects.

Speaking about Monday’s Industrial Strategy launch, Martin highlighted the long-term approach to revitalising British enterprise. The comprehensive plan promises to attract substantial investment whilst reducing energy costs by 30% for crucial sectors including automotive and steel production.

“This strategy represents a partnership approach rather than quick fixes,” Martin stated. “It has the potential to generate 1.1 million well-compensated positions nationwide.”

For Portsmouth specifically, Martin identified defence as a key growth area, suggesting residents could access enhanced skills programmes and training pathways leading to higher-paid employment.

The government’s commitment includes establishing 60,000 additional training positions in sectors such as digital technology, engineering, and defence. A decade-long initiative to reduce bureaucratic barriers aims to encourage business confidence and expansion.

Thursday’s Trade Strategy publication further reinforced the government’s business-focused agenda. Martin pointed to existing agreements with India, the United States, and the European Union as evidence of the strategy’s potential, citing billions in trade value and job protection.

The newly announced Ricardo Fund will tackle trade obstacles whilst unlocking £5 billion in export potential. Additionally, UK Export Finance expansion of £20 billion will assist more companies in securing international contracts, with streamlined border processes reducing export costs and timeframes.

Martin concluded that these combined measures position UK businesses advantageously within emerging high-growth industries whilst facilitating international trade engagement.

“A Portsmouth entrepreneur could establish a defence enterprise, expand their operations, train local workers, and access support for global sales,” she explained.

The MP characterised the current administration as responsive to business needs and committed to delivering growth, employment, and international trade opportunities for Britain’s economic advancement.
