Portsmouth pupils celebrate reading at annual book awards ceremony

Hundreds of Year 5 students gathered at Kings Theatre to celebrate reading at the annual Book Awards. Author Mitch Johnson won for his novel Toxic, receiving over 1,500 votes from pupils across 21 local schools.

The spectacular ceremony, held on Wednesday 25th June, marked another successful year for the School Library Service’s flagship reading celebration. Students from across Portsmouth came together to honour their passion for literature as part of the city-wide In Our Words programme, coordinated by Portsmouth Creates.

Mitch Johnson’s compelling novel Toxic emerged victorious from the pupil vote, demonstrating the power of engaging storytelling to capture young imaginations. The democratic process saw students from 21 participating schools casting their ballots for their favourite reads.

The event spotlighted exceptional Reading Champions from local schools—students who not only demonstrate enthusiasm for books but encourage their classmates to embrace reading. Diya from Ark Ayrton Primary Academy and Cooper from Penbridge School received special recognition on stage from the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, and the Lady Mayoress.

Adult inspiration was equally celebrated, with Mrs Churchill and Mrs Lammas from The Flying Bull Academy receiving Inspiring Adult awards, as nominated by their pupils for their dedication to promoting literacy.

The ceremony showcased creative talents, featuring a compelling dramatic performance by pupils from St Swithun’s Catholic Primary School and an original poem by Mayville High School students, both works inspired by the winning novel. A digital exhibition displayed artwork created by pupils responding to the shortlisted books, with five outstanding artists receiving special commendation.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, commented:

“Reading represents one of the most valuable gifts we can offer our young people. It unlocks imagination, learning, and endless possibilities. The Portsmouth Book Awards celebrates reading joy whilst showcasing the remarkable efforts in our schools to develop creativity and confidence in every pupil.”

This year’s ceremony holds particular significance as part of the 2025 In Our Words programme—a year-long tribute to Portsmouth’s literary legacy and creative potential. Portsmouth Creates organises this initiative, encouraging residents of all ages to connect with literature, storytelling, and the arts through varied events.

Gemma Nichols, CEO of Portsmouth Creates, stated: “We’re delighted to champion this year’s Portsmouth Book Awards, celebrating exceptional literature and reading’s transformative impact. Our In Our Words initiative promotes accessibility, nurtures young voices, and cultivates lifelong book appreciation. As a community, we must unite to enhance literacy levels and inspire future generations of thinkers, storytellers, and leaders.”
