Days left to comment on Hampshire biodiversity strategy

Hampshire residents have just days remaining to share their views on the county’s Draft Local Nature Recovery Strategy before consultation closes on Monday, 23 June.

The comprehensive strategy outlines biodiversity priorities aimed at reversing nature’s decline across Hampshire, mapping valuable existing habitats and proposing areas for creation, restoration and enhancement of natural environments.

Developed alongside numerous partner organisations, the draft document could influence how future agricultural funding is allocated and assist local planning authorities in identifying crucial biodiversity conservation areas.

Key proposals include:

  • Guidance for sustainable farming practices and woodland management
  • Identification of priority zones for habitat creation and connectivity
  • Support for community groups seeking nature recovery project funding
  • Integration of natural features into urban infrastructure, including stormwater systems

The Environment Act 2021 mandated local areas to develop Local Nature Recovery Strategies. Hampshire County Council was appointed as the lead authority for the entire county, encompassing Southampton and Portsmouth city council areas, plus Hampshire portions of the New Forest and South Downs National Parks.

The strategy emerged from extensive consultation with stakeholders and communities throughout Hampshire, supplemented by public surveys to capture residents’ priorities.

Hampshire County Council expects to publish the finalised Local Nature Recovery Strategy before year-end.

Further details about Hampshire’s nature recovery approach are available on the County Council’s website.

The supporting authorities include Portsmouth and Southampton city councils, Hampshire’s district and borough councils, both national parks, and Natural England.
