Portsmouth Hosts Major Anti-Fraud Conference Today

The University of Portsmouth welcomes over 60 global experts today for its annual Counter Fraud, Cybercrime and Forensic Accounting conference, addressing critical issues in economic crime and cybersecurity.

The 14th annual conference, hosted by the Centre for Cybercrime and Economic Crime, runs from today through Thursday 19th June at the Richmond Building. The two-day event brings together academics, law enforcement officials, and industry professionals to share research and expertise on combating modern financial crimes.

Key Themes and Topics

This year’s programme covers an extensive range of contemporary issues including fraud prevention and victimisation, cryptocurrency risks and responses, business fraud, misinformation on social media, and romance fraud. Additional sessions will explore cyber-enabled terrorism, virtual assets, and building resilience against cybercrime.

The conference aims to facilitate networking whilst sharing research insights and techniques to inform scholars and professionals about crucial debates in cybercrime, economic crime, and forensic accounting.

Distinguished Speakers

Notable speakers include Professor Nicholas Lord from the University of Manchester’s Centre for Digital Trust and Society, and Fran Dowling, Head of the Fraud Policy Unit at the Home Office. Industry expertise comes from Daniel Sibthorpe of Crowe LLP UK, Craig Jones from CyPol (formerly INTERPOL’s Director of Cybercrime), and Evan Williams from Alibaba.

Kay Linnell, Forensic Accountant and Chartered Arbitrator with the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance, will also present, alongside Professor Michael Levi from Cardiff University.

Conference Structure

Wednesday’s programme begins at 8:30am with registration, followed by opening addresses and keynote sessions. Parallel speaker sessions run throughout both days, covering specialised topics such as banking fraud, African cybercrime, and cryptocurrency regulations.

Thursday features additional sessions on business fraud, misinformation, romance fraud, and cyber-enabled terrorism, concluding with closing remarks at 4:30pm.

Access and Pricing

Attendance costs £120 for both days or £80 for a single day, with University of Portsmouth alumni receiving a 50% discount. Current UoP staff and students attend free of charge. Selected sessions, including plenary and keynote speeches, will be streamed online at no cost.

The conference takes place at the Richmond Building on Portland Street, Portsmouth, with poster presentations available throughout both days in rooms RB0.10/0.111.
