Portsmouth City Council marked National Learning Disability Week by highlighting their recent Accessible Voting Day, designed to empower adults with learning disabilities and autism to participate confidently in the democratic process through interactive activities.
The initiative, which coincides with National Learning Disability Week’s theme “Do you see me?”, focuses on creating an inclusive environment where adults with learning disabilities and autism can develop their understanding of electoral procedures.
The council’s Accessible Voting Day provides a supportive atmosphere where participants engage with voting processes through interactive games and practical activities. This approach helps build confidence amongst attendees, preparing them for future visits to polling stations during official elections.
As part of their commitment to electoral inclusion, Portsmouth City Council has developed a comprehensive Accessible Voting Guide using easy-read formatting. This resource was created in collaboration with volunteers and members of the local Dynamite co-production group, ensuring the materials meet the specific needs of the community.
