Portsmouth Cathedral will host the annual memorial service for seafarers and those lost at sea on Sunday 29 June, with the Lord Mayor leading a civic procession and wreath-laying ceremony.
The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, will be accompanied by Hampshire’s Lord-Lieutenant, Nigel Atkinson, alongside mayors from Gosport, Havant, and Fareham for the commemorative service. The Very Reverend Dr Anthony Cane, Dean of Portsmouth, will conduct the proceedings.
Shortly after 11am, the Lord Mayor will head a brief civic procession down St Thomas’s Street towards the cathedral in Old Portsmouth. Following the service, attendees will process to Admiral Lord Nelson’s statue on Grand Parade in Old Portsmouth, where Hampshire’s Lord-Lieutenant will oversee the wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial. The Lord Mayor will then cast a wreath into the sea in remembrance of all lives lost at sea.
Portsmouth Launches New Quit Smoking Support Service
Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Lord Mayor, commented: “I feel honoured to participate in this significant event. This annual service for seafarers and those who perished at sea serves to honour those who died at sea, both in Portsmouth and beyond, including those who lost their lives in service to our nation.”
Attendees will include Royal Navy representatives alongside community, military, and charitable organisations. Donations will be collected for the Seafarers’ Charity during the service.
