Bristol City are reportedly nearing the appointment of Rob Edwards as their new manager, a development that could significantly impact Portsmouth’s summer pursuit of defender Rob Atkinson following Liam Manning’s confirmed departure to Norwich City.
Edwards has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge at Ashton Gate, with the 42-year-old currently favourite with bookmakers to succeed Manning. The appointment could prove pivotal for Portsmouth’s transfer ambitions regarding Atkinson, who impressed during his loan spell at Fratton Park in the latter half of last season.
John Mousinho features among the contenders for the Bristol City position, recently listed at 10/1 fourth favourite behind Edwards, Ruben Selles and Gary O’Neil. However, the Portsmouth manager has indicated his contentment at Fratton Park and remains focused on preparing his side for their second Championship campaign.
Edwards brings considerable experience, having been without a role since departing Luton Town in January after guiding the Hatters to Premier League promotion. His managerial reputation was established at Forest Green Rovers, where he secured the club’s first-ever promotion to League One before moving to Watford.

Crucial Connection Could Benefit Portsmouth
The potential appointment holds particular significance due to Edwards’ established relationship with Portsmouth’s director of football Rich Hughes, which developed during their time together at Forest Green Rovers. This connection could prove instrumental in Portsmouth’s efforts to secure Atkinson permanently during the summer window.
Manning had previously suggested Atkinson would return to Bristol City following his successful loan period, telling the BBC that the defender would be “coming back here” unless circumstances changed. The managerial upheaval at Ashton Gate has clearly altered this situation, creating uncertainty around Atkinson’s future.
Portsmouth manager Mousinho has been vocal about his desire to retain the 26-year-old centre-back as part of his squad. The club’s existing positive relationship with Bristol City technical director Brian Tinnion, which facilitated Atkinson’s initial loan move, could also prove beneficial in future negotiations.
Hughes’ close ties with Edwards would provide Portsmouth with valuable insight into the new manager’s plans for Atkinson, should the appointment be confirmed. This relationship advantage could prove decisive in Portsmouth’s pursuit of making the loan move permanent.
