A major five-month bridge restoration project at M27 Junction 12 Hilsea interchange begins tomorrow, with overnight lane closures planned throughout summer and full weekend closures from September to November.
National Highways engineers will commence restoration work on two bridges at the Hilsea interchange tomorrow (June 5), with the project scheduled to run until November.
The extensive works will see lane one closed overnight between 8pm and 6am during June, followed by lane three closures during the same hours throughout July and early August. The busy interchange connects the M27 with the M275 and links to the A27 at North Harbour and Hilsea.
A National Highways spokesperson explained: “We’ll need some overnight, full carriageway closures in August. We’ll do this in one direction at a time to limit disruption to traffic as much as possible.
“In September to the end of November, we’ll need some full weekend closures. We’ll do this in one direction at a time to limit disruption to traffic as much as possible.”

Comprehensive Bridge Restoration
The extensive renovation will involve replacing expansion joints on both bridges, which accommodate bridge deck movement caused by temperature changes and traffic loading.
Additional work includes replacing kerb drainage systems, upgrading overall drainage infrastructure, re-waterproofing and resurfacing bridge decks, and repairing concrete structures beneath both bridges.
Ongoing Area Works
Separately, 40mph speed restrictions continue on the nearby Langstone bridge along the A27, located just miles from M27 Junction 12. These reduced limits remain in place for safety purposes whilst barrier repair work continues at that location.
