A significant five-month project to repair and restore bridges over the M27 in Portsmouth has begun slowly, with delays reported on its opening day. Engineers from National Highways are working on two bridges at the Hilsea interchange, junction 12 of the M27, in a project that commenced on Thursday 5 June and is expected to continue until November.

The initial overnight closure saw lane one shut last night, the first of several planned closures. For safety reasons, National Highways has announced lane one closures in both directions from 8pm Thursday night until 6am Monday morning on both bridges throughout June. This will switch to lane three closures during July and early August.

Lane three will be closed during the same hours in July and early August. Full carriageway closures are also scheduled later this year at the busy interchange where the M27 meets the M275, which also connects to the A27 at North Harbour and Hilsea.

On the first night of closure, work continued causing delays for morning commuters. AA Traffic News reported: “Partially blocked and queueing traffic due to overrunning roadworks on M27 Eastbound at J12 M275 (Portsmouth).”

“Severe delays of 14 minutes and increasing delays on M27 Eastbound between J11 A27 (Fareham / Gosport) and M275. Average speed 15 mph.”
