Umeh Joins Portsmouth From Palace in Four-Year Deal

Portsmouth have completed the signing of forward Franco Umeh from Crystal Palace on a four-year contract for an undisclosed transfer fee, with the 20-year-old versatile attacker joining the Blues at Fratton Park.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 international, who is capable of operating in multiple positions across the attacking line, has put pen to paper on a deal that runs until 2028.

Manager John Mousinho expressed his delight at securing Umeh’s signature, highlighting the player’s impressive displays at youth level: “Franco stood out as one of the best performers in Premier League 2 during the previous campaign.

“He earned tremendous respect within a gifted Crystal Palace academy setup and has gained valuable experience training alongside their senior squad and featuring in matchday squads.

“We’ve been monitoring his development for more than 12 months and he adds significant speed and physical presence to our attacking options.

“While Franco’s preferred position is on the right flank, his versatility allows him to contribute in various roles, and we’ve recruited him to make an immediate impact whilst representing an exciting long-term investment.”

The young forward’s journey began at Cork City, where he broke into senior football aged just 17 with his debut appearance against Longford Town.

Palace secured his services in February 2023, and Umeh quickly made his mark in their development squad with consistent Premier League 2 performances.

A highlight of his time at Selhurst Park came when he netted the decisive goal in the Premier League International Cup final triumph over Jong PSV, showcasing his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

His impressive form at club level translated to international recognition, earning him selection for Ireland’s under-21 squad and making his debut in the fixture against Scotland in March.

Umeh’s arrival strengthens Portsmouth’s attacking depth as they continue building their squad for the upcoming campaign.
