Charlie Savage has declared his intention to remain at Reading next season, dealing a blow to Portsmouth and other Championship clubs pursuing the Wales international midfielder this summer.
The 22-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation following an impressive League One campaign that saw him register nine assists – the second-highest tally in the division.
Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Wrexham and Blackburn Rovers have all expressed interest in securing Savage’s services, with Reading reportedly valuing the former Manchester United academy product at £2million
However, speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire after Reading’s final-day defeat to Barnsley, Savage made his position clear: “I’ve got two more years here so you’ll be seeing me next season”.
Savage reaffirms commitment to Royals
The midfielder’s loyalty to Reading was further demonstrated through a social media post following the Barnsley match, where he thanked supporters and looked ahead to the upcoming campaign.
“Wasn’t to be today, but can honestly say all of the players gave 110% this season,” Savage wrote. “Thank you to the fans again for sticking with us during the last 2 years, hopefully we showed you all how much it means to play in front of you all! Onto next season.”
The message concluded with a blue heart emoji, symbolising his continued allegiance to the Royals.
Impressive statistics attract Championship attention
Savage’s stellar performances have not gone unnoticed, with the midfielder featuring in 45 of Reading’s 46 league fixtures last season. His consistency was matched only by defender Tyler Blindon in terms of appearances.
Since joining from Manchester United in 2023, Savage has accumulated 96 appearances for Reading, contributing 12 goals and 15 assists across two seasons. His seven goals from midfield last campaign exceeded the combined tally of Portsmouth’s central midfielders Andre Dozzell, Freddie Potts, Isaac Hayden and Marlon Pack.
Mark Bowen, Reading’s former head of football operations, praised Savage upon his arrival, describing him as having “bags of talent” and being “intent on making an impact as a senior footballer”.
Portsmouth’s midfield rebuild continues
The news will disappoint Portsmouth manager John Mousinho, who is seeking midfield reinforcements following the departures of loanees Potts and Hayden to their parent clubs. Marlon Pack’s influence waned as last season progressed, while Abdoulaye Kamara managed just five substitute league appearances after his move from Borussia Dortmund.
Savage’s commitment to Reading, despite the club narrowly missing the League One play-offs by three points, demonstrates the strong connection he has forged with the fanbase during a period of financial uncertainty.
The Wales international remains under contract at the Select Car Leasing Stadium until 2027, having signed a four-year deal upon his arrival from Old Trafford.
