Portsmouth Football Club have completed the signing of goalkeeper Josef Bursik from Club Brugge for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old former England youth international has penned a two-year contract at Fratton Park.
The shot-stopper, who represented England at various youth levels including the under-21s, joins John Mousinho’s squad to strengthen the goalkeeping department.
Manager John Mousinho commented: “Josef is a player who demonstrated considerable potential in his younger days and has accumulated valuable Championship experience.
“His arrival significantly strengthens our goalkeeping options and represents a target we’ve been monitoring for some time, so we’re thrilled to have secured his signature.”
The London-born goalkeeper progressed through Stoke City’s youth system and gained valuable experience during loan periods at several clubs including Hednesford, Telford, Accrington, Doncaster, Peterborough and Lincoln during his development years.
Following 53 appearances for Stoke City, Bursik moved to Belgium when he joined Club Brugge in January 2023.
Most recently, the goalkeeper spent the previous campaign on loan at Scottish Premiership side Hibernian, where he made 17 appearances for the Edinburgh club.
Bursik’s international credentials include being part of England’s squad that reached the European U17 Championship final in 2017, before achieving success by winning the World Cup at the same age level later that year.
The goalkeeper also earned his first under-21 cap in 2020, keeping a clean sheet during England’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Albania at Molineux Stadium.
Portsmouth’s new signing will now compete for the number one position as the Blues prepare for the upcoming Championship season.
