Police Operation Ready for Portsmouth v Southampton Derby

Police are preparing comprehensive security measures for Sunday’s highly anticipated derby between Portsmouth and Southampton, with specialist teams working to ensure supporter safety.

Hampshire Constabulary’s specialist units have been collaborating with both football clubs for several months to guarantee the derby fixtures become season highlights.

With just days remaining before kick-off, supporters are encouraged to represent their clubs with pride as the teams meet in league competition for the first time since 2012.

Assistant Chief Constable Tony Rowlinson, Gold Commander overseeing the policing strategy, commented: “We understand how thrilling this inaugural derby match is for supporters, and we have numerous fans of both sides within our force who share that enthusiasm.

“This is precisely why we have worked exceptionally hard alongside the clubs to ensure this fixture succeeds for all participants and demonstrates football at its finest.

“Following the clubs’ decision to implement club-managed travel arrangements, we have ensured our policing strategy reflects this approach.

“We possess considerable expertise in successfully managing matches between these clubs, which is enhanced by the robust relationships our Dedicated Football Unit maintains with each team, collaborating with them weekly both home and away.

“Our primary concern for any such event is naturally public safety, and our approach to this match centres on this principle.

“We recognise that most supporters simply wish to attend the match and experience the distinctive atmosphere this fixture creates, and we have collaborated with supporter groups to help ensure attendees feel secure. They have been instrumental in this process, and I would like to thank them for their continued support.”

Due to the policing strategy, fans may observe different policing styles compared to typical football matches, with specially trained officers positioned around the stadium wearing protective gear to maintain safety.

Police teams will also assist fan coaches travelling to and from the venue, coordinating with both clubs to ensure safe arrival and departure of all supporters.

Additional tactics will be deployed that remain invisible to the public, all designed to maintain safety.

ACC Rowlinson continued: “Unfortunately, we recognise that a small minority may attempt to spoil this match for others, which is why our policing operation is prepared to respond quickly to prevent any disruption.

“The planning operation has been extensive, aiming to deploy our most effective tactics to prevent disorder whilst minimising disruption to those not attending the match.

“We will have specialist units positioned at various locations, highly trained to handle any situation they encounter, and we are utilising technology, including drones, to maintain clear visibility of ground-level activities.

“These are proven tactics that helped us secure convictions earlier this year following violent disorder at matches, resulting in over 20 individuals receiving prison sentences and Football Banning Orders lasting up to ten years post-conviction. We know these methods are effective.

“I would also remind people that several offences relate to possessing and using flares or pyrotechnics, which can also result in Football Banning Orders, so please consider your actions carefully.

“Regardless of on-pitch events, do not risk facing consequences because we will take action. Show passion and support your team appropriately.

“We have naturally worked extensively with partners, including the clubs, council and transport agencies to ensure supporters have all necessary information for the best possible experience.

“There are planned engineering works at Southampton Central railway station that day, so I would remind Southampton fans who typically use rail transport to consider this and check online with relevant agencies to avoid delays.

“For supporters with any concerns on Sunday, please speak to our officers – they are there for your safety.

“We anticipate playing our role in ensuring this match is safe and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of who claims the points, and we encourage fans to do their part in making their clubs proud.”
