Marlon Pack insists Portsmouth’s 3-1 victory over third-placed Millwall on Saturday should come as no surprise, despite the Blues sitting near the foot of the Championship table.
Goals from Gustavo Caballero, John Swift and captain Pack in the second half secured a statement win at The Den, extending the gap between Pompey and the relegation zone to six points.
Pack believes the result reflects Portsmouth’s recent form rather than a shock upset. “In terms of how we’ve been performing, I don’t think that result should come as any big surprise – although it probably is if you just look at the league table,” he said.
“We were the better side in defeat against Preston and Sheffield United, but if you maintain those levels, then you will get the reward.”
The skipper was full of praise for the travelling support and his teammates following a demanding midweek fixture. “I thought the lads were outstanding after a gruelling battle on Tuesday night and we played some brilliant football. It was a great moment for me to score in front of our fans – it was absolute bedlam in there.”
Pack also highlighted the growing partnership between himself, January arrival Ebou Adams and playmaker Swift. “You’ve got three different types of player and we all seem to complement each other nicely. Ebou is a great partner because of his dynamism, how much ground he covers and his tenacity – but also his quality.”
He added that Swift’s influence, visible daily in training, is now translating into matches. “He always wants the ball and is a great person to play into.” Pack also paid tribute to the absent André Dozzell, whose contribution he feels often goes unrecognised.
Despite the positivity, Pack urged caution. “We do have to stay grounded, but also relish what’s ahead – and now need to dust ourselves down for another big test on Tuesday.”
