Callum Lang experienced one of his finest moments in football when he returned from injury during Portsmouth’s 3-1 victory over Millwall at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon.
The striker received a thunderous reception from supporters when he replaced Adrian Segečić just past the hour mark during Pompey’s Callum Lang vs Millwall Championship encounter. Despite the Blues already leading 2-0, the ovation rivalled those for the goals themselves.
Lang had been absent for three months following hamstring surgery, making his comeback all the more special for both player and fans.
The forward acknowledged his return would be carefully monitored. “The plan was always for approximately 30 minutes, though I’m uncertain what the remainder of this week holds. I’ll likely need managing for a bit,” Lang explained.
“There were goosebumps when I came on the pitch and it’s actually one of the best feelings I’ve had in football,” he added. “I hit the ground running when I signed here after a frustrating spell at Wigan and haven’t really looked back – I owe a lot to everyone here.”
Lang created three scoring opportunities against the Lions and remains optimistic about Wednesday night’s trip to Sheffield United. “It was a big result for us on Saturday – we were aggressive from the first whistle and it was a great win,” he said.
“I had a shot blocked and then the keeper came out quickly to make the save, while I thought I’d done everything right for the header. I’m not too frustrated because I know the chances will come if we continue to play like that and I’m just excited to be back.”
The 26-year-old praised the surgical decision: “Having the surgery was the best decision to make sure it’s solid and fingers crossed, there will be no more problems.”
