Five Portsmouth Stars Called Up for International Duty

Five Portsmouth FC players have received international call-ups for the September break, with representatives heading to Australia, South Africa, and Northern Ireland squads for crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Hayden Matthews & Adrian Segečić

Both players have been selected for Australia’s squad ahead of the ‘ANZAC Soccer Ashes’ series against New Zealand.

The Socceroos will face their trans-Tasman rivals in Canberra this Friday, followed by the second leg in Auckland on Tuesday, 9th September.

The matches provide valuable preparation ahead of next summer’s World Cup, with Australia having already secured their qualification.

Segečić is hoping to earn his maiden senior international cap, whilst Matthews seeks to build on his solitary appearance in last year’s qualifier against Bahrain.

Former Fratton Park loanee Sammy Silvera has also been included in Tony Popovic’s 25-player squad.

Luke Le Roux

The summer recruit has been named in South Africa’s squad for two pivotal World Cup qualifying encounters.

Bafana Bafana face Lesotho away on Friday before welcoming Nigeria to home soil on Tuesday, 9th September.

South Africa currently top Group C with 13 points from six fixtures – maintaining a five-point advantage over Rwanda and Benin. Only the group winners secure automatic qualification for next summer’s finals.

Le Roux, who earned his first senior cap in 2022, will be targeting an addition to his nine international appearances.

Terry Devlin

The adaptable 21-year-old has been included in Northern Ireland’s squad as they commence their World Cup qualifying journey.

Michael O’Neill’s team begin their campaign away to Luxembourg on Thursday before a testing encounter in Germany on Sunday.

Northern Ireland compete in the four-team Group A alongside Slovakia. The group winners qualify automatically, whilst second-placed teams enter the play-off rounds.

Devlin aims to add to his three senior caps, having debuted in March’s 1-1 stalemate with Switzerland.

Makenzie Kirk

Portsmouth’s transfer deadline day acquisition features in Northern Ireland’s under-21 squad beginning their 2027 UEFA European U21 Championship qualification campaign.

The Young Lions travel to Georgia on Tuesday, 9th September in Group F, competing alongside Germany, Greece, Latvia, and Malta.
