Former Portsmouth title winner Kal Naismith has rejoined Luton Town for the third time in four-and-a-half years after being released by Bristol City at the end of the season.
The 33-year-old Scottish defender’s contract was terminated by the Championship club following an injury-plagued three-year stint at Ashton Gate.
The veteran has wasted no time securing his next move, penning a deal with the Hatters yesterday as they prepare for League One football in the 2025-26 campaign.
This marks Naismith’s third return to Kenilworth Road in less than five years, underlining his strong connection with the club.
Luton Love Affair Continues
The defender initially joined Luton in January 2021, contributing to their Championship play-off semi-final run against Huddersfield in May 2022.
He departed for Bristol City weeks later, ending an 18-month spell, before returning on loan this past January 2025.
During his recent loan stint, aimed at preserving Luton’s Championship status, Naismith featured in 10 matches and earned man-of-the-match honours in their 1-0 triumph over Portsmouth in March.
Luton boss Matt Bloomfield expressed his delight at securing Naismith’s signature permanently.
“It’s crucial that Kal has committed to us,” Bloomfield said via the club’s official website. “He commands tremendous respect here and boasts an excellent track record with our club.
“Most importantly, his organisational abilities and leadership qualities are outstanding, and he’ll be vital both on and off the field for us next term.”
Portsmouth Glory Days
Naismith remains a cherished figure at Fratton Park following his instrumental contribution to their 2016-17 promotion campaign under Paul Cook.
Signed from Accrington Stanley in May 2015 for an undisclosed sum, his debut season on the south coast proved challenging as the then-winger battled personal tragedy following his girlfriend’s passing.
Remarkable Turnaround
After being placed on the transfer list in summer 2016 and relegated to training with the youth team, Naismith orchestrated a stunning career revival.
Operating predominantly as an attacking midfielder, he became an unstoppable creative influence whilst netting seven times in his final nine outings to spearhead Portsmouth’s remarkable League Two title push.
Schmid Snubbed Despite Brilliant Portsmouth Form
He concluded that season as Pompey’s top marksman with 15 goals, though struggled to replicate that brilliant form under Kenny Jackett following Cook’s departure in May 2017.
Fratton Park Exit
Naismith’s Portsmouth chapter concluded in June 2018 when his contract expired, reuniting with Cook at Wigan Athletic after registering 94 appearances and 21 goals for the Blues.
Following three seasons with the Latics, he made his initial switch to Luton in January 2021 – and now returns once again.
“Returning on loan was incredible, but signing permanently as a Luton player feels special, and I’m thrilled,” Naismith told the club’s website.
“I was determined to continue this journey, so no other option crossed my mind. Certain clubs simply suit you, and this club suits me perfectly. At this point in my career, I remain hungry for success and regular football.
“I haven’t signed for life, but honestly, I’d happily do so tomorrow, because this is where I want to finish my playing days.”
