Portsmouth’s Championship fixture at Charlton Athletic was abandoned on Saturday following a tragic medical emergency that claimed a supporter’s life. The match at The Valley was halted in the 12th minute before being called off, with the fan later passing away in hospital.
The incident occurred in the lower tier of the Covered End during the early stages of the goalless encounter. Referee Matthew Donohue initially instructed players to wait on the pitch whilst emergency services attended to the supporter, before eventually directing both teams to the dressing rooms.
Nearly an hour after the medical emergency began, officials confirmed the match would not resume. The Addicks later released a statement confirming the devastating news that the supporter had died in hospital despite the efforts of first responders and club staff.
