Portsmouth FC have secured their first summer signing with Australian forward Adrian Segecic joining from A-League side Sydney FC, with the 21-year-old expressing his delight at the move1.
The striker, who was the A-League’s joint leading scorer last term, made his decision to join Pompey following discussions with manager John Mousinho and is eager to begin Championship preparations.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here and get settled in, so now I just can’t wait to get going,” said Segečić after completing his switch to Fratton Park.
The young Australian revealed that whilst other clubs had shown interest, his conversation with Mousinho proved decisive in his choice to move to the south coast.
“There were other clubs I spoke with, but after chatting with John and Rich there was really no turning back,” he explained.
Segečić’s arrival reunites him with former Sydney teammate Hayden Matthews, bringing Portsmouth’s Australian contingent back to four players alongside Jacob Farrell and Thomas Waddingham.
“Hayden and I had been together for nine years and I’ve been in national teams with the other two lads,” the forward noted.
The new signing praised Portsmouth as a city, admitting he had expected different weather conditions upon his arrival from Australia.
“I was expecting it to be dark and gloomy, but I think I’ve brought the weather over with me from Sydney! This is an incredible city and the photos don’t do it justice.”
Having previously spent time in Holland, Segečić highlighted the advantage of moving to England without facing language barriers, describing the transition as smooth.
The striker is now looking forward to meeting supporters and exploring his new surroundings whilst preparing for the upcoming Championship season when pre-season training commences next week.
