Portsmouth MP Stephen Morgan has praised Labour’s support for Armed Forces personnel, highlighting the biggest pay rise in over two decades alongside major housing improvements and new support systems.
Speaking during Armed Forces Week, Mr Morgan reflected on his visit to Southsea Common for Armed Forces Day celebrations, where he engaged with service personnel and military charities whilst attempting to play the bagpipes for the first time.
The Portsmouth representative emphasised the government’s commitment to honouring those who serve and have served, along with their families, describing them as individuals who “put their lives on the line for our country every day.”
Mr Morgan highlighted Labour’s achievements for military personnel during their 11 months in office, including consecutive above-inflation pay increases and the largest salary boost in more than 20 years.
The government is also taking control of military accommodation, purchasing 36,000 properties and investing over £7 billion in Armed Forces housing throughout this parliamentary term. This initiative aims to address longstanding issues, accelerate essential repairs, and ensure quality homes for service members.
Additionally, the new VALOUR system is being established to provide veterans with streamlined access to housing, employment, and healthcare support.
This month marked the beginning of the search for Britain’s inaugural Armed Forces Commissioner, an independent advocate for service personnel and their families who will address concerns regarding accommodation, equipment, and welfare.
The government is also modernising recruitment processes and expanding opportunities whilst making military careers more attractive to young people. Plans include growing the Cadet force by 30% before 2030 as part of the ongoing defence review.

Mr Morgan stressed Labour’s determination to resolve defence challenges accumulated over the previous 14 years, emphasising the importance of strengthening connections between the Armed Forces community and the general public.
Demonstrating this commitment, the government is enhancing Armed Forces Day by reinstating the National Event for the first time since 2023. Following efforts by Melanie Onn MP, Cleethorpes will host this year’s National Event, featuring the Red Arrows alongside contemporary and historical aviation displays.
Mr Morgan concluded by encouraging Portsmouth residents to join him in celebrating and honouring current service members, veterans, and the broader Armed Forces community during this significant week.
