Portsmouth Trading Standards has issued crucial advice to residents during Consumer Awareness Week about purchasing disability aids safely, warning of scams and providing guidance on finding trustworthy sellers for essential equipment.
The service has highlighted the importance of shopping carefully when buying disability aids such as mobility scooters, hearing aids, and stairlifts, as these items are essential for helping disabled people live more independently.
Key Checks Before Purchasing
Before buying any disability aid, Portsmouth Trading Standards recommends residents carry out several important checks:
- Explore rental options first – Some charities may loan disability aids, so check rental possibilities before purchasing
- Investigate grant availability – Additional financial support may be available through grants
- Check VAT relief eligibility – Find out if VAT relief applies to your purchase
- Confirm ongoing costs – Establish whether there are any continuing service charges
- Review return policies – Ensure you understand cancellation rights and return procedures
Finding Trustworthy Sellers
The service advises residents to start their search through official channels:
- Local council websites – Available through GOV.UK
- Approved scheme providers – Such as the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA)
- Living Made Easy website – Provides links to verified retailers
- Established charities – Age UK and RNID offer guidance on disability aids
Portsmouth Trading Standards emphasises the importance of obtaining multiple quotes and comparing product reviews across different platforms before making a decision.
Understanding Your Rights
Consumer rights vary depending on whether products are bespoke or standard items. For non-bespoke products purchased online, by phone, or at home (over £42), customers typically have 14 days to change their mind after delivery, with an additional 14 days to return the item.
For faulty products, regardless of how they were purchased, customers have legal rights if items are damaged, unusable, or don’t match descriptions.
Avoiding Scams
Portsmouth Trading Standards warns residents to be particularly wary of cold callers claiming to conduct medical surveys or represent the NHS. These scammers often attempt to arrange home visits.
Protective measures include:
- Registering with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS)
- Requesting call-blocking services from phone providers
- Using standalone call-blocking devices
- Always researching companies before agreeing to home visits
