Portsmouth has launched its ambitious electric vehicle charging expansion, with over 150 new chargepoints now operational across the city in partnership with Zest.
The city is embarking upon a transformative phase of electric mobility, as fresh on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities are being deployed throughout Portsmouth.
Working alongside prominent chargepoint provider Zest, Portsmouth City Council has begun installing state-of-the-art EV chargepoints, with more than 150 units already operational on street lamps and bollards citywide.
This represents the beginning of a substantial enhancement to Portsmouth’s EV infrastructure, aimed at simplifying vehicle charging for residents near their homes. The deployment receives backing through the government’s On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS), combined with matching investment from Zest.
Over 3,000 Portsmouth residents currently own plug-in or hybrid vehicles, with projections indicating this figure could exceed 20,000 by 2030 – approximately one in four residents. This expansion forms part of broader plans to address increasing demand and motivate more people towards electric vehicle adoption, with more than 300 chargepoints scheduled for the coming year, particularly targeting residential areas lacking private parking.

Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport, commented:
“We’re beginning a fresh chapter for transport, with widespread electric vehicle (EV) adoption. This demands making EV-charging available to everyone. Through these new EV chargepoints being fitted in practical residential locations, especially where private parking isn’t possible, we’re preparing the city for the future and simplifying the transition to EVs for more residents. It represents a vital element of our comprehensive strategy for cleaner air, reduced emissions, and healthier transport choices.”
Robin Heap, CEO at Zest, stated:
“We’re thrilled to witness our collaboration with Portsmouth City Council materialise, with chargers now operational throughout the city. Progressive local councils dedicated to sustainable transport are essential to road electrification, and it’s vital we continue providing convenient charging solutions that integrate seamlessly into daily life.”
