New Stamshaw Youth Hub Construction Begins

Construction has commenced on a new youth hub at Stamshaw adventure playground, with Portsmouth City Council marking the project’s launch with a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday 14th July.

The £500,000 facility, funded by BAE Systems, will serve young people aged 14-24 when it opens in early 2026. The multi-purpose educational space will complement the existing adventure playground which currently caters for children up to 13 years old.

During daytime hours, the hub will provide educational services, career guidance and support for young people not in employment, education or training. Council employability teams and local specialists will deliver advice and assistance to users.

The facility may also host STEM sessions and career workshops delivered by various providers, including BAE Systems, maximising the hub’s potential. Evening operations will feature youth club activities with diverse programming.

Portsmouth City Council consulted with playground users and local residents to shape the project’s requirements. DM Habens is constructing the environmentally-friendly building at the southern end of Stamshaw playground, designed to minimise impact on surrounding areas.

Roxy, 17, who has attended the adventure playground since age four, expressed enthusiasm for the project. Currently studying at college with aspirations to join the army as a driver, she said: “It’s rewarding being part of the playground and making things better for younger people.”

Council Leader Steve Pitt described the groundbreaking as “a big step forward for the project,” adding: “I’m sure this new facility will play a big part in making sure our young people are equipped with all the skills they need to be successful in the future.”

Scott Jamieson, Managing Director of Defence Solutions at BAE Systems, highlighted the company’s community commitment: “At BAE Systems we’re deeply committed to supporting the local community and we’re proud to play a part in bringing this project to life. We look forward to seeing the facility open its doors next year.”

Portsmouth currently operates four council-run youth clubs alongside additional projects, including the existing Stamshaw youth club. These facilities serve children aged 11-19 with varied activities and operating times. Most clubs open Monday to Friday evenings, with some providing daytime sessions for young people not in education, employment or training.
