Hampshire County Council has installed a new all-weather surface on the Hayling Billy Trail, enhancing accessibility for walkers, cyclists, mobility scooter users and horse riders throughout all seasons.
The council has upgraded the 1.3-kilometre northern stretch of the trail on Hayling Island, fixing deteriorated areas and installing a durable surface that provides better resistance to erosion and storm damage.
Councillor Kirsty North, the county council’s cabinet member for universal services, commented: “The Hayling Billy Trail is a cherished route for both locals and tourists, providing an exceptional combination of seaside scenery, historical significance, and wildlife.
“These enhancements ensure that more individuals – whether they’re walking, cycling, horse riding, or using mobility equipment – can access the trail safely and comfortably year-round. This exemplifies Hampshire County Council’s commitment to improving access to our stunning countryside and promoting outdoor physical activity.”
The Hayling Billy Trail utilises a former railway line and forms part of the extensive Shipwrights Way route connecting Farnham to Portsmouth, as well as National Cycle Network 2 (NCN2), which is planned to eventually connect Dover to Cornwall along England’s southern coastline.
The upgrade has been financed through the Government’s Active Travel Fund.
