Hillsea Lines Update: Huge Progress at Hilsea Lido

The Hilsea Lido has reached a major milestone, with the pool now filled with water as contractors from Beard push ahead with the restoration project, marking significant progress in the highly anticipated reopening.

Pool Testing Under Way

The pool is currently undergoing a week-long water level test, with a surveyor visiting regularly to monitor measurements. The water contains no chemicals at this stage and the filters remain switched off, so any leaves or debris visible in the water is expected. Once testing is complete, the pool will be filled to capacity and specialists Barr and Wray will commission the filtration system.

Video footage of the project will be published on Portsmouth City Council’s Facebook page at 10am on Saturday, 7 March.

Beach Huts and Showers Taking Shape

Sixteen individual and four family beach huts, which will serve as changing rooms, are being installed along the length of the former lido building. Each hut features a pitched roof and lockable door. Outdoor shower bases have been painted blue to match the pool, with a plumber currently fitting the units — four showers in total, two at each end. Indoor private showers are also available on site.

Resin Surfacing and Depth Markers

A 20mm resin layer is being applied over the tarmac in stages, providing a fresh, comfortable surface underfoot. Timber planking visible alongside the resin is temporary, used only to protect the surface during beach hut installation. Depth markers and ladders have also been fitted around the pool, along with handrails on the far side.

Car Park and Pathway Disruptions

Visitors to the area are advised that car parking remains limited while the team clears equipment and removes temporary site offices. Parking is expected to return to normal by 20 March. Additionally, the pathway leading to the wake park will be temporarily closed from 12 to 20 March to allow the safe removal of hoardings.
