University of Portsmouth and Isle of Wight College have collaborated on an innovative fraud prevention competition, with students presenting creative video solutions to tackle fraud issues affecting communities.
The competition brought together four student teams from Isle of Wight College, representing Level 3 Forensic Science and Criminal Justice alongside Uniformed Public Services programmes. Each team crafted original video presentations addressing different aspects of fraud prevention, from victim grooming tactics to impersonation schemes.
Expert judges from the University of Portsmouth’s School of Criminology and Criminal Justice evaluated the presentations alongside an Acting Detective Inspector from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Economic Crime Unit.
The winning presentation focused on holiday accommodation fraud specifically affecting the Isle of Wight, delivered by the Level 3 Year 2 Uniformed Public Services team. Judges praised their thorough research, creativity, and clear communication skills.
Joanne Smith, Programme Lead in Police Education at Portsmouth, highlighted the students’ impressive subject knowledge: “Each group selected a unique area of fraud, raising key issues in fraud prevention. The groups impressed the panel with their innovative advice on tackling each issue.”
Mike Sizer-Green, Lecturer in Criminology and Law at Isle of Wight College, noted the students’ development: “I witnessed our students using research skills and data analysis to develop their ideas. I saw teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving, and fantastic communication skills on display.”
The victorious team expressed their gratitude, stating they felt “overwhelmed with happiness” and described the experience as “unforgettable,” emphasising how the collaboration helped develop skills for their future careers.
