Police have confirmed the identity of a woman found dead beside the A31 as 46-year-old Yajaira Castro Mendez from Ilford, whilst a 51-year-old man has been charged with her murder.
Body Discovery Confirms Fears
Officers have confirmed that human remains discovered on Saturday, 7 June, belong to Ms Castro Mendez, whom investigators had believed to be the victim of foul play.
The 46-year-old was last spotted in Camden on Thursday, 29 May, prompting a murder investigation that culminated in the grim discovery along the westbound carriageway of the A31 at approximately 5pm on Saturday.
Traffic Chaos as Investigation Unfolds
The discovery resulted in significant travel disruption, with one lane initially closed causing substantial delays on Saturday and Sunday. By Sunday evening at 5pm, the entire A31 westbound was shut, followed by the closure of the M27 up to junction 2 at 5.30pm whilst police conducted their enquiries. The road fully reopened on Monday.
A Metropolitan Police representative stated: “During searches conducted in Hampshire’s Bolderwood area, detectives discovered human remains. Official identification procedures have been completed. Specialist officers continue providing support to her relatives.”
Investigation Continues
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Sean Beasley, heading the investigation, commented: “This represents a deeply saddening turn in our investigation, and our sympathies lie entirely with Yajaira’s relatives and friends during this extraordinarily challenging period.
“Our officers have maintained continuous efforts and are pursuing all aspects of the case.
“Multiple crime scenes remain active whilst we collaborate closely with Hampshire Police. We appreciate the public’s understanding during our investigation and urge anyone possessing relevant information to contact us immediately.”
