A 29-year-old Southsea man has been charged with multiple offences including racially aggravated assault following an incident outside a Portsmouth mosque on Sunday evening.
Police were called to reports that around 9:30pm on Sunday 31st August, a man was being verbally abusive towards a small group of men, women and children outside the Jami Mosque on Victoria Road North.
The man reportedly punched one member of the group before producing a knife and acting aggressively towards two other men. No serious injuries were sustained during the incident.
Officers will continue patrols in the area, and residents with concerns are encouraged to speak with uniformed police.
Callum McInally, 29, from Waverley Road in Southsea, has been charged with:
- Racially/religiously aggravated common assault by beating
- Assault by beating
- Racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress
- Threatening a person with a blade/sharply pointed article in a public place
McInally was remanded in custody and appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday 2nd September), where he entered guilty pleas to all charges.
He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday 3rd October for sentencing.
