Police have seized a moped and detained a man in Waterlooville following multiple resident complaints about dangerous riding and anti-social behaviour turning Bell Crescent streets into a race track.
Officers from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team have increased patrols in Bell Crescent after receiving numerous reports from concerned residents about recklessly operated mopeds.
The detained male was searched before police confiscated his moped due to lack of insurance. According to Waterlooville Police’s Facebook statement, a member of the public identified this particular vehicle as responsible for much of the area’s anti-social behaviour.
“Officers detained one male for a search and seized a moped for no insurance,” the police statement read. “A member of the public confirmed that this very moped was behind much of the anti-social behaviour in the area. Another nuisance vehicle off the road means quieter nights and safer streets for residents.”
Local residents have described various incidents of disruptive behaviour in response to the police announcement. One resident complained: “Milton Road every night is like a race track and a competition of who’s exhaust is the loudest. Would be nice to have a decent night’s sleep!”
Another resident reported: “Every afternoon they ride their bikes in the skate park next to St Albans church, revving the mopeds really loud.”
Further complaints highlighted issues around Botley Drive and New Lane, where residents reported seeing young riders performing wheelies without wearing helmets.
The police action has received praise from local residents, with one commenting: “At last we’ll done guys!”
