Oakley man jailed for offences days after prison release

A 27-year-old man from Oakley has been sentenced to 40 weeks in prison for failing to comply with sexual offender notification requirements and committing theft just days after his release from custody.

Leon Davies, of Sycamore Tree Road, pleaded guilty to breaching sexual offender notification requirements, two charges of shoplifting, and two violations of a Criminal Behaviour Order when he appeared before Basingstoke Magistrates Court on Monday 9 June.

The court was told that Davies is registered as a sexual offender following an indecent exposure conviction in 2024, which requires him to meet specific notification obligations.

Davies admitted failing to meet these requirements after he did not report to a police station within three days of his prison release, as legally required.

Following his release from custody on Thursday 29 May, Davies committed theft offences on consecutive days. On Friday 30 May and Saturday 31 May, he stole alcohol from the One Stop store on Oakley Lane, Oakley.

These thefts also constituted breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order that was imposed in 2024 following previous shoplifting convictions.

The order requires Davies to use a basket or trolley for items, demonstrate he can pay for goods, and leave premises when asked to do so by staff.

Davies received a total custodial sentence of 40 weeks for all offences.

Inspector Charlie Ilderton commented: “Davies faced multiple charges and must now accept the consequences of his behaviour.

“Sexual offenders who fail to comply with notification requirements commit a serious offence, and we treat the management of this matter with the utmost seriousness.

“We recognise the significant impact Davies’ shoplifting activities have had on local businesses and retail staff in our area.

“We will continue to utilise all available powers to ensure individuals who demonstrate such contempt for the law face justice in court.”
