Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has appointed Chief Inspector Matt Moss as the new District Commander for Havant and East Hampshire, replacing Chief Inspector Alex Charge who has been promoted to Superintendent.
The constabulary has announced that Chief Inspector Matt Moss will take over as District Commander for Havant and East Hampshire. His appointment comes as Chief Inspector Alex Charge moves up the ranks to Superintendent, taking on the role of District Commander for Southampton.
Bringing extensive policing expertise to the position, Chief Inspector Moss joins the district from the Contact Management Department, where he had been leading the Triage Hub since October 2023.
Starting his career with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary in 2001, Chief Inspector Moss began his service in Gosport before transitioning to the Force Control Room in 2004 as a police controller. His journey continued in Portsmouth from 2005, where he spent a decade working across various roles before joining the Licensing Team covering both counties.
His career progression saw him promoted to Sergeant in 2017 with a posting to Hedge End, leading Neighbourhood Policing teams. He took on Inspector duties temporarily in 2019 on the Isle of Wight before securing permanent promotion to Inspector in 2021 at the Police Control Room as a Force Incident Manager. This position involved becoming an initial Tactical Firearms Commander and pursuit manager, whilst supervising daily officer deployment across the force.
Chief Inspector Moss achieved his current rank in 2023, overseeing the development of the force’s Triage Hub – a department responsible for reviewing most incoming crime reports from various sources. He also manages the Force’s Post Incident Managers, a team of senior officers and staff ensuring transparency regarding police involvement in incidents resulting in death or serious injury.
Having grown up locally in the Waterlooville area where he also attended school and college, Chief Inspector Moss is married with two daughters aged 8 and 4. An avid golfer, he organises the Force’s golf section, arranging friendly matches against local clubs, including those in the Havant and East Hampshire districts.
Speaking about his appointment, Chief Inspector Moss commented: “I’m thrilled to be appointed as the District Commander for Havant and East Hampshire.
“These two districts present such diverse policing challenges, which I know my teams will tackle tirelessly around the clock. I strongly believe in maintaining maximum visibility and community connection. I lead from the front, so expect to see me out in the community or posting directly on our social media channels. Please engage with us in any way possible – I’m eager for community input on our policing priorities.
“Should you become a crime victim, I expect my teams to contact you promptly, communicate clearly about our actions, and provide regular progress updates. I expect my teams to pursue relentlessly those committing crimes in our towns, villages, and rural areas, but public assistance is essential for this.
“The information you provide is crucial in helping us police our communities effectively, and we encourage reporting any information that could assist us.
- Dispersal order issued for Basingstoke town centre
- Man charged after stolen vehicle found near Whitchurch
“Please continue contacting us to report crime, suspicious activity, or anti-social behaviour. Don’t let concerns about ‘lengthy waits on 101’ deter you. This year’s average response time for 101 calls is 2 minutes and 21 seconds, with 92.6% of all 101 calls answered within 10 minutes.
“For emergencies, the average 999 call response time is just 3 seconds.
“If you haven’t completed a Let’s Talk survey, please do so. Let’s Talk is our community survey initiative designed to understand local community needs and allows you to share concerns with our officers. It’s an invaluable tool already helping us better understand public concerns and work with partners to address raised issues effectively.”
