Four individuals have been detained following the death of a man in Portswood on Tuesday evening (3 December). Police have launched a murder investigation after responding to reports of an altercation on Belmont Road shortly before 11.30pm.
Authorities were alerted to an incident involving two men who had allegedly been attacked by an unidentified individual. Upon arrival, officers discovered the suspect had sustained a severe chest injury.
Despite emergency response efforts, the man—whose identity has not yet been established—was declared deceased at the location.
Police presence continues in the area today as officers conduct thorough enquiries and maintain increased patrols throughout the neighbourhood.
Four Southampton residents have been taken into custody on suspicion of murder as part of the preliminary investigation. Those arrested include men aged 22, 26, and 51, along with a 52-year-old woman. All remain in police custody pending further enquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Rebekah Bartholomew, leading the investigation, acknowledged the impact on local residents: “I recognise this development and the necessary road closures will cause concern among the community. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience as we continue our work.
“Our investigation is at an early stage, and officers are working diligently to establish the precise sequence of events leading to this incident.
“Current evidence suggests this was an isolated occurrence. However, residents with concerns are encouraged to approach officers who will be present around Belmont Road over the coming days.”
