Electric bikes fire Hampshire homes while charging

Two separate electric bikes fire Hampshire incidents have occurred in recent weeks, with charging lithium-ion batteries sparking blazes in Southampton and Aldershot, prompting fire service warnings about battery safety ahead of the Christmas shopping season.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has raised concerns following the recent incidents involving lithium-ion battery products.

Earlier this week, a Southampton property experienced a blaze when an electric bicycle being charged caught fire. Fire crews tackled the battery pack fire inside the residence before clearing smoke from the kitchen, lounge and upper floor.

A similar incident occurred last month in Aldershot, where an electric bike’s battery ignited a garage fire. Although extinguished upon arrival, the blaze generated substantial smoke and caused considerable damage to nearby items. Crews used ventilation equipment to clear the building.

Tracey Webb, Prevention Manager at HIWFRS, commented: “With Christmas approaching, residents across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are shopping for presents for family and friends – it’s vital these purchases are safe and won’t create fire hazards.

“When purchasing electrical items including mobile phones, tablets, e-scooters and other devices with lithium-ion batteries, buy only from trusted retailers and verify they comply with UK Safety Standards.

“Always use the manufacturer-supplied charger, avoid overloading electrical sockets, and never charge devices overnight or when nobody’s home.”
