Basingstoke dispersal order targets illegal car meets

Police have implemented a dispersal order in Basingstoke this weekend to combat anti-social behaviour at unauthorised car meets, giving officers enhanced powers to remove individuals from designated areas between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

The order remains active from 7pm on Saturday 28th June until 7am on Sunday 29th June.

Authorised under Section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, the dispersal order allows police to address anti-social behaviour more effectively across the designated zone.

Officers possess additional authority to direct individuals to leave the specified area with no return permitted during the order period. Failure to comply constitutes a criminal offence and may result in arrest.

The measure follows numerous reports of anti-social behaviour and dangerous driving at recent unauthorised car gatherings throughout the town.

Basingstoke Police Sergeant Pete Scamell commented: “We harbour no objections to car enthusiasts gathering socially, however motorists engaging in anti-social driving endanger road users and disrupt local communities.

“Our position is unambiguous – anti-social behaviour and vehicle misuse will not be tolerated in Basingstoke.

“We urge all drivers to behave responsibly and drive safely. Illegal and anti-social conduct will face consequences, including vehicle seizure, penalty notices, insurance company notification, dispersal notices, or arrest and prosecution when warranted.

“The covered area encompasses a substantial portion of the district and we can rapidly extend the order to additional areas if necessary. Additional officers will be deployed this weekend.

“Anyone with concerns or information regarding criminal activity should contact us on 101 or dial 999 for emergencies.”

Incidents of dangerous or anti-social driving can also be reported through Hants SNAP, a police initiative addressing alleged road traffic offences.
